Preparing Pressed Herbarium Samples

Knobbly Creeper
The Mogalakwena Research Centre keeps a herbarium record of all flowering plants found on the River and Mountain Reserves. Collecting specimens for the herbarium is a regular exercise as we aim to identify, source and document reference specimens for our records and future scientific work.

In 2009 we added a number of plant specimens to the herbarium, including a few new species not before recorded on the Reserves. These species include Bell Bean Tree Markhami zanzibarica, Knobbly Creeper Combretum mossambicense, Bluethorn Acacia eurubescens and Blackthorn Acacia mellifera to name a few.

As a further extension of our herbarium project, we have now begun a flower book to encourage interest and involvement in the wildflowers on Mogalakwena Reserves. As herbarium samples are so delicate, our flower book aims to create an interactive book displaying pressed samples of each flowering plant, carefully protected within each page of the book. Live photographs of the flowers and growth structures of each tree also complement the pressed samples. We have also created seed curtains, delicately displaying the different texture and types of bushveld seeds.
