The Mogalakwena River is an important river system in the Limpopo Province. However, limited studies have been conducted on the ecology of the Mogalakwena River. A variety of aquatic projects can be undertaken for Honours or as industry placement experience. Project ideas might include:

1) Riparian response to altered flow regime and/or catchment land-use. This project would involve riparian condition assessments, fluvial geomorphological assessments and habitat integrity assessments to ascertain the degree of change to riparian habitat from natural state. Management recommendations to improving riparian habitat for local land-owners could be made, including presentations to the local Waterboard.

2) Fish diversity, distribution and density studies. Some studies on fish population (mostly diversity) have been conducted on the Mogalakwena River. This information could be taken further to include the response of fish community assemblages to regulated flow regime and/or catchment land-use. Recommendations for improving fish habitat along the Mogalakwena river could be made, including presentations to the local Waterboard.
