The SABAP2 is a joint project of the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), Animal Demography Unit (ADU) and Birdlife South Africa (BLSA). SABAP2 is a long-term national project, collecting data on bird species distribution and relative abundance across South Africa.
The Mogalakwena Research Centre Team enlisted as part of this project in October 2009. Mogalakwena Reserves covers four atlasing pentads, including some unique habitats that have limited birding records.
As part of this project, we conduct an intensive birding survey in each pentad once a month. We are proud to contribute data from remote parts of the Limpopo Province to these projects, as this data can be used to improve bird species conservation and measure the impact of environmental change on the continuation of Southern African birds.
To further strengthen our involvement in this project, we enter the Birding Big Day Competition held on the last weekend of November under the SABAP2 category each year. In 2009 we counted a total of 119 birds for the pentad covering Mogalakwena River Reserve. To find out more, visit the SABAP2 website.
